Call for Council Applications, 2026-2029 Term

Serving the public interest is rewarding work. Becoming an ACOT Councillor allows you to lead and regulate the profession to ensure OTs provide safe, ethical and competent care.

A note from Arwen Caines, President

Serving on the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT) Council has been a great professional experience. I have had the privilege of contributing as a Councillor, Vice President, President, and will continue my service as Past President for the upcoming year. I also had the experience of chairing the Governance Committee. Through each of these roles, I have gained valuable experience in governance, strategic planning, risk oversight, and policy development—skills that extend well beyond regulation and positively influence my broader leadership work.

Serving on Council throughout the COVID-19 pandemic was both challenging and transformative. It required thoughtful, principled decision-making in rapidly evolving circumstances, balancing public protection with professional realities. That experience deepened my appreciation for strong governance, forward thinking leadership, and the responsibility we hold in regulating in the public interest.

I am particularly excited about the evolving potential of occupational therapists in Alberta, especially in expanding options that increase public access to timely diagnosis. ACOT plays a critical role in enabling innovation while ensuring competence, safety, and accountability. Being part of shaping that future—thoughtfully and strategically—has been incredibly rewarding.

Council service offers a unique opportunity to lead, learn, and meaningfully influence the direction of the profession in Alberta. It challenges you to think systemically, collaborate across perspectives, and maintain public trust. For me, it has been an opportunity not only to serve, but to grow. I would strongly encourage any occupational therapist who is passionate about leadership and the future of our profession to consider putting their name forward.

This year, we are seeking up to three Councillors – in particular, OTs from rural areas, from diverse practice backgrounds, and people from equity denied groups. Please review the application materials, and feel free to contact ACOT if you have any questions or require support. We would love to welcome you!
