As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into healthcare, whether introduced into practice by the employer, registrant or the client, ACOT registrants must be prepared to address and engage with AI responsibly. To support this, ACOT has prepared a new Practice Guideline: Artificial Intelligence and Occupational Therapy, now available on the ACOT website.
Over the past several months, ACOT has worked extensively on the development of this guideline to support registrants in understanding what artificial intelligence is, its use in occupational therapy, and the potential benefits and risks associated with its use. The guideline outlines key considerations to support the safe, ethical, and competent use of AI in practice.
Development of this guideline involved a comprehensive environmental scan of AI guidance in healthcare regulation, review of relevant research and grey literature, attendance of webinars/conferences led by subject matter experts, and completion of an ACOT registrant survey to better understand registrants’ specific guidance needs. Highlights from the registrant survey were shared in the November 2025 ACOT eNews.
Registrants are encouraged to review the new guideline to support informed, ethical, and competent use of AI in occupational therapy practice. Questions about this document or the use of AI in occupational therapy practice in Alberta can be directed to info@acot.ca.
